Haywood family letters, 1868-1889.

The collection consists of the letters of Alfred Haywood, his wife Georgia (Georgiana Trenholm Haywood), their daughter Jane Chennell Haywood (1863-1942), their son, Harry, and Arsene de Griffin Trenholm, sister-in-law of Mrs. Haywood. Most of them are family letters. Of interest are the letters of Alfred Haywood to William M. Wadley, January 10, 1873, re a proposed bridge over the Ogeechee Canal to be built by the Central Rail Road & Banking Co., and Gen. Robert H. Anderson, September 28, 1879, re the participation of the St. George Society in the centennial anniversary of the death of Sgt. William Jasper. Most of the letters of Alfred Haywood are extracted from letter press copy books. Mrs. A. de G. Trenholm's letters are addressed to Fannie.

Alfred Haywood, a native of England, came to Savannah in 1845 and conducted a grocery business. Some time after the Civil War until his death he operated an ice business.
